Our National Program supports innovative leaders and entrepreneurial organizations working across communities and disciplines to bring about transformation. We invest in their ideas and integrate their contributions into our programs nationally and in the 26 Knight communities. We aim to deepen the impact of their work by sharing the knowledge gained from these investments with change leaders in our communities and nationwide.

Through our National Program, Knight Foundation seeks to address significant issues that affect many communities and that offer opportunities for developing innovation on a large scale. We provide models, leverage resources and influence decisions that can create systemic change.

Stories of Transformation

Tempering the Immigration Debate: An Assessment of the American Dream Fund

From coast to coast, the newly documented surge in immigrants was changing communities. Inside some of America’s largest foundations – including Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York — staff members took notice of the new figures. They sensed, correctly, that the topic of immigration was hot, and they wanted to get involved.

What We Fund

Economic Development

We work to develop effective strategies to foster community prosperity and provide greater opportunities for disadvantaged neighborhoods and families. We encourage entrepreneurship and research, and we often collaborate with universities and other major institutions to develop new approaches to revitalizing their home communities.

Social Innovation

We invest in bright ideas, individuals and organizations with the potential for achieving high-impact social change. We combine financial and intellectual capital; we help develop strategies for large-scale action with measurable, replicable results. We support bold ideas and work to nurture an environment where visionary social entrepreneurs can thrive.

Neighborhood Sustainability

We support broad, systemic approaches to creating more livable, sustainable neighborhoods for urban residents. We recognize that sustainability means a collection of ongoing services – not only affordable housing, but also education, health care, public safety, transportation, recreation, and the conservation of land and natural resources.

Citizenship and Civic Engagement

We aspire to enable all residents to participate in their communities and to assume the full rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy. In partnership with national organizations and groups working at the grassroots level, Knight supports efforts to promote citizenship, civic education and active involvement in community life.
