We are a national foundation with local roots.
We choose, as the Knight brothers chose, to focus on journalism and communities, inspiring and enabling them to reach their highest potential. Because grant making requires a sound financial base, we preserve the Knight brothers’ gifts through prudent investment and careful management.
Knight Foundation's signature work is its Journalism Program. Since 1950, the foundation has invested nearly $400 million with 1,000 partners to advance quality journalism and freedom of expression worldwide. Today, the program focuses on leading journalism excellence into the digital age. We define journalism excellence as the fair, accurate, contextual pursuit of truth. Read More on Journalism
The Communities Program funds projects that provide direct and measurable benefits to residents in our communities, and are at the highest levels of quality and innovation. Letters of Inquiry must respond to specific opportunities identified within a community and should be developed only after extended conversations with foundation staff. Read More on Communities
Knight's National Program seeks innovators and entrepreneurial organizations. We engage them in developing ideas with the potential for transformation. Read More on National
